Introduction, Establishment

In 1926, when our country-was shackled-by-slavery-suffering-from-the atrocities of-British-oppressors, and finding it
difficult for Indians to breathe a sigh of peace, the intelligent woman born among those oppressors, who made India her field of
work and took a special interest in shaping the abilities ofIndian boys and girls to develop their innate tendencies, interests, and
other potential, was the educationist, Dr. Annie Besant.
This institution was born from the inspiring memory of this glorious, dignified goddess, Dr. Annie Besant. In
November 1926, Krishnashram, or the Theosophical School, Allahabad, was established in the spacious building of Justice
Knox on the picturesque banks of the sacred Bhagirathi. Numerous social workers actively contributed to the birth of this
institution, but Dr. Annie Besant, Pt. Iqbal Narayan Gurtu, and Justice Shankar Saran were prominent among them. Over time,
to honor and respect Dr. Annie Besant's selfless service in the development and progress of various sectors of India's national
life, the institution was renamed Annie Besant School in 1930. At that time, the British-run convent educational institutions in
the Allahabad district were considered elite institutions for the wealthy. Admission to these institutions was prohibited for
Indian boys and girls. While this sentiment was insulting to the Indian people, there was also a great need for such institutions
where the above mentioned classes could train their boys and girls.
Hence, in accordance with this line of thought, Dr. Annie Besant became especially active in this direction with her
colleagues to inculcate Indian culture in children and forthe all-round development ofIndian boys and girls, keeping in view the
physical, intellectual and emotional development of the children through modern system, she gave birth to this institution to
give concrete shape to the goal of making them capable citizens of the country and awakening the most beautiful feelings in
them.
Colonized India was far behind in terms ofeducation and training. Thousands ofIndians were illiterate at that time. All
educational institutions were aimless. Mrs. S.G. Pierce, a European woman, was appointed as the school's first principal. Thus,
the institution was inaugurated with six or seven students. The school continued to grow day by day, and the responsibility of
running it was transferred fromthe Rishi Bailey Trust to the Krishnashram Educational Trust.
As time went on, the school gained notoriety as a respected institution. This was the reason why many great
personalities graced the institution and sanctified its sacred grounds with their presence. Notable among them are J. Krishnamurthy, Dr. Arundale, Sir Shah Muhammad Sulaiman, Tej Bahadur Sapru, Sir Lal Gopal Mukherjee, Governor Sir
Homi Modi, Mrs. Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay, and others. Later, senior members of the institution opened a children's home
for boys and girls, and the management committee also attempted to provide accommodation for teachers. Honorable member
Mr. Iqbal Narayan Gurtu resolved to fulfill this idea. However, due to financial constraints, this was not possible. As a testament,
Gurtu Kuj, where the nursery department currently operates, stood alone in the school courtyard, overlooking the other homes.
In addition to bookish learning, debates, essay writing, drama, music, dance, painting, sports, and more have been organized.
Scouting and Guiding programs have been established at the school to equip students with the skills and skills necessary for
their daily needs. Finally, with the blessings of Dr. Annie Besant, the school is growing day by day. Numerous students trained at
this school have brought glory to the institution through their intellect.
